82 Million Content Creators

Last year over 82 million people in the US created content on the Internet according to research released by eMarketer. This number is set to grow to almost 115 million by the end of 2013.

Not surprisingly 87% of these people created content on social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. They would have been doing simple tasks like creating their personal profiles, uploading photos and exchanging links. However the figures suggest that these first forays onto the web are leading people to undertake more advanced online activities like blogging and uploading videos.

Of the 82.3 million 26% also have blogs and 19% uploaded videos.

This trend is set to continue into the future as more people become aware of what they can do online.

What Are The Implications of More User Generated Content?

There are positive and negative implications to more UGC:

Pros:

  • More people are sharing their knowledge and expertise
  • People are contributing to communities of people who share their interests
  • Individuals are able to compete with larger organisations
  • The quaility of the best information on the web continues to get better
  • There are many new and exciting ways for content creators to make money online
Cons:

  • The internet continues to get cluttered with poor quality user generated content
  • With no restrictions a lot of the user generated content is misleading, libelous, pornographic, insulting and incites hatred

Conclusion

The pros of more user generated content far outweigh the cons. The search engines continue to improve the way they weed out the rubblish. If content creators are serious about using the Internet to publish their knowledge, their voice will be heard above the noise if they focus on creating great quaility, highly focused content.
