![]() Finding Your VoiceI guess it may sound a little strange to those of you reading this article that actively write your own blog or online magazine content, but how much of what you write is really reflecting your own personality? Let me explain . . . This article is quite personal to me, as it's only in the last year or so that i've really started writing content in earnest. It was after writing for a few weeks that I started questioning my writing style, or 'voice'. Did my content reflect my real personality? Was I, Mark Ramskill, actually coming across in what I was writing, or was I guilty of trying to be someone i'm not? Having re-read previous articles and thinking about how I was coming across, I realized that Mark the author was unrecognizable from Mark, the real person behind the words. I was in danger of falling into a bland, conveyor-belt style of writing. A trap that is so easy to fall into. From an early age we're taught that you should not write like you speak. Supposedly, this helps create focus for your writing. But, it also removes personality. I've rapidly realized that when you remove your personality from your writing you are not only failing to be true to yourself, but you're also removing the guts from what you write. We each have a unique personality that sets us apart from others - that should be expressed in what we write, no matter what the content. Be true to yourself and your uniqueness will show in your writing - something that others will appreciate and enjoy (hopefully!). Look at the blogs or newspaper and magazine columns of your favourite writers. Souless or full of personality? Exactly. One last thought to consider. Don’t let the idea of becoming an authority in your niche overshadow your personality. Look at the blogs and magazine sites in your niche that you consider authoritative. I’ll bet you’ll find that personality, in some form, comes before authority on just about every single one of those sites. Find your voice and your personality and watch your writing and follower numbers blossom! blog comments powered by Disqus |
